Sound To Picture Content

Project: Sound Design Example - Frost

Goal: Use only sound effects to portray the story

Description:

Original video from 11 Bit Studios. All sounds and music were removed and replaced with personally created content. I wanted to challenge myself by designing this trailer with no music accompaniment. In place of musical pads, I used changing wind patterns and factory drones for the foundation. With the absence of music, I think the trailer becomes more emotionally powerful with the closer connection to the characters.

Project: Sound Design Example - Assassin

Goal: Recreate a game trailer with personal sound and music

Description:

Original video taken from Ubisoft. All audio was removed from the trailer and replaced with personally created content. The concept was to use a realistic orchestra as both music and effects along side the traditional effects and foley. An example of this is the multiple timpani strikes as impacts and a mouthpiece rubbing against a brass bell as a sword unsheathing.

Sound to picture

Above is a project for a sound design course taken at Michiagn Technological University. We were only given the video file without any sound and it was up to us to create whatever sounds we felt nessisary for the video. For this project, we were allowed to create our own sounds as well as the ability pull sounds if desired. This was orignally mixed in 5.1 surround but has been mixed down to stereo. Feel free to contact me to hear the surround mix.

Silent Sky

Sound Design: Jacob Gust & Sam Balk

Music Composition: Dr. Libby Meyer

Silent Sky is a play told the life of Henrietta Leavitt about how her passions helped her through hard situations to overcome any possibility. Our sound design focused around the show being one part ethereal and the other grounded in the everyday. The sound effects including the space themes and pads created the ethereal soundscape while the music and the ambiences were focused around the period. A good example on how we connected to two is the Main Theme with Space Pad. The focus in this scene is pointed to Henrietta and the music while almost unknowingly the sound of silence was mixed in the cats. Once the final lines are said and the chord resolves, the sound of silence is heard providing a moment for the audience to reflect on their passions and limitations.

My work on this play included creating the original natural ambiences, the sound of silence, and programming the sounds in the space. We used QLab for our playback system and had 28 channels of speakers to send out our sounds. During the main musical themes, I programed the music to start above the piano before expanding in a shperical motion as more instruments are added.

Husky Games Development

Husky Games Development (HGD) is a student enterprise at Michigan Technological University. Here students can develop skills that will help them succeed in the field of video games and other interactive media.

I have been a part of HGD for three years while at school. In those years, I have had the chance to be a Sound Designer and Composer for multiple games/teams. The work that I have completed for these teams are provided below.

What Is Your Emergency?

This game is currently still in its development phase. It is a simulator for a 911 operator. You are given a situation and you have to assign the correct authorities or you will suffer consequences. The soundtrack for the game will feature several short compositions in varying styles to simulate a radio station heard over the office speakers. Everything was implemented into the game using Unity.

Arcade Team 1: Tronh

This first team made a game similar to the Tron bikes, it was title Tronh. I was contacted to make some background and menu music for the game, along with some sound effects. The game itself was coded in java and can be downloaded on the HGD website.

Arcade Team 2: Down Under

This team created a digging scroller based around mining valuable minerals. I was contacted to create music for multiple aspects of the game as well as the sound effects that you will here. The game was coded in java and can be downloaded on the HGD website.
